Ronny Elliott Last One Standing from "Magneto" release 2002 I had a dream last night that I was taling with Jo0hnny Cash. We talked about the music business and politics. Rock'n Roll. I asked him, "What was it like, walking with gods at Sun Records in Memphis?" He looked me in the eye and laughed and he said, "We weren't gods then; just a bunch of hillbillies trying to make a living without working." Then he kind'a choked up and slouched in his chair. I played three chords and I sang in a key that wasn't too demanding. I wanted to be the king of rock'n'roll, but I don't want to be the last one standing. Now, I'm sitting here thinking about Jerry Lee Lewis; bad career moves, opportunities missed, wrong place at the wrong time. I want to ask him, "How does it feel to be the original bad boy? The Killer, a real bad ass?" He just shrugged. He gave me that go-to-hell look but I thought I saw a tear in his eye. I left for England, the crown prince, came home to Memphis with a hard landing. I should have been the king of rock'n'roll, but I don't want to be the last one standing.
