Gram Parsons Notebook Thu, 06 Jul 2000 16:34:10 -0500 Has anyone heard this yet?I think it comes out today and is available only at groovetone.com from today's Dallas Morning News THE PARSONS PHENOMENON Country-rock pioneer Gram Parsons is having a better career now than when he was alive. Last year, the onetime Byrd and Flying Burrito Brother - who died of a drug overdose in 1973 - was feted with his second tribute album, the star-studded Return of the Grievous Angel. Now he's the subject of The Last Whippoorwill: The Gram Parsons Notebook, a new CD based on lyrics hidden in a drawer for two decades by John Nuese,Parsons' cohort in the '60s-era International Submarine Band. The disc pairs lyrics penned by Parsons from '72-'73 with music written and/or performed by Jim Lauderdale, Ricky Skaggs and Elvis' guitarist James Burton, among others. There's also a version of "Dead Flowers," the Rolling Stones song supposedly inspired by Parsons. But even more intriguing is country crooner Allison Moorer's ode to the singer in the video to her new song "Send Down an Angel." Performing in a high desert lined with Joshua trees (Parsons died near Joshua Tree National Monument in California), Ms. Moorer is shadowed by a Parsons-like ghost decked out in the singer's famous Nudie-designed white stage outfit.
